Geoffrey: "What passage are you thinking of here? Re: Elven multi-classing. That's an interesting interpretation of that passage and one I've never heard before. I'm fairly certain that it can't possibly be correct, however.
You seem to be interpreting "adventure-to-adventure" to mean "level-to-level", but I'm not clear on how you're justifying that interpretation. And artificially bloating the power and ability of a character is silly.
If you absolutely, positively must dot every "t" and dot every "i" by making sure that every single paragraph in every single story featuring the character can be mechanically accounted for, then it makes a lot more sense to simply build an appropriately balanced, custom-designed class for them rather than shoehorning in a bunch of extra stuff.
Re: Clerics. The influence of the Lord Darcy stories on the division between divine and arcane magic is generally under-acknowledged. Oh, and re: mix-and-match multiclassing in the LBBs I momentarily forgot this: "For every 50 Elves encountered there will be one of above-normal capabilities. Roll a four-sided die for level of fighting and a six-sided die for level of magical ability Not level-to-level. The exact abilities available I would leave as a separate issue.
Never did care much for that series. While it did get me to read some cool stuff, they never really had a good grasp on what "level" meant. Level bloat was almost standard. Is that such a problem? Why does anyone need to be 20th level? So long as you assume that the average dumb town guard is only Level 0 like he should be, and a military Veteran is a Fighter Lv 1.
For the example of Conan, you can't get away from the fact that he's the exemplary case study used to illustrate what it means to be a high-level fighter from the earliest kernel of the game "superheroes of the 'Conan' type", Chainmail p. The absence of "cleric" and "paladin" classes is not, I think, a reflection of their nonexistence, but rather of the desire to avoid the controversy that would be created by their inclusion.
A list of literary figures who fall into these classes would be historical or semi-historical. They would largely include figures from Jewish and Christian literature and legends. But it's easy to see why TSR wouldn't have wanted to open that particular can of worms, and so stuck to the "safer" option of using only religiously neutral figures from Homer and Shakespeare.
Not sure about that. I remember that in the article in issue 55 which covered a version of "Robin Hood" based more on the early legends than on Hollywood, the author stated that none of these characters although I think only Robin himself, Little John, Friar Tuck, and the Sheriff were given stats were written as belonging to the ranger subclass because that subclass didn't fit into the legends.
I think the early writers were trying to hew VERY closely to the source material, so that's true enough. A much later Dragon article which included Roland DID cast him as a paladin and made his sword Durendal extremely powerful, among other things able to kill evil people or creatures with less than 5 hit dice with one blow, explained as the relics in the hilt acting as poison to evil constitutions.
It also fits the source material, in which Roland and his compatriots act like superheroes. Lancelot was described in the early Deities and Demigods as a paladin, but as having "fallen from grace" due to his dalliance with Elaine, and later in Legends and Lore as a fighter who had once been a paladin, but lost the benefits after he and Guinevere committed adultery following his harrowing rescue of her from the evil Meleagans. I don't think any of the other figures there received any kind of writeup in Dragon or a source book, at least not that I'm aware of.
That is one way to keep a campaign world consistent, although plane-hopping could allow the PCs to encounter the real thing. It's really up to what the players and DM think would be fun. I believe the Charlemagne's Paladins sourcebook that came out in the early s tried to steer away from using the paladin class and sticking close to history, which was more barbaric than chivalric.
The Crusades sourcebook, which hit around Thanksgiving , allowed the choice between a low-magic "historic" campaign, in which clerics were seriously depowered and paladins had no special abilities, a mid-magic "legendary" campaign, and a high-magic "fantasy" campaign. One other article that might be worth looking at also was entitled "Setting Saintly Standards" from Dragon In it the author describes saintly figures, what their powers would be, and how to use them.
He also provides four exemplars one evil. Essentially they are one step below demigods. Again, it's up to the DM and the players to decide if characters like that are appropriate. Personally, I think that, like in the 1st Edition Dungeon Master's Guide, encounters with characters like that should be similar to those with demons and devils - very rare, tied to a specific location major house of worship or holy site or occurrence powerful priest entering the area, major disaster, uncovering of an artifact or relic , involving only one such being, and with a purpose.
I wouldn't even try to give a writeup for Christ, since He was God and way beyond statistics, but Moses and Elijah might represent interesting exercises in creation. Are they essentially powerless unless God gives them the nod to do whatever, or were they "wizarded up" and able to use their powers as they saw fit? What about the rod of Moses? Is it powerless out of his hands, or could anyone use it to summon an insect plague, a creeping doom, a powerful wind, or to part water or turn a river to blood?
George and St. Joan of Arc could be just ordinary fighters, the latter maybe even fairly low-level since she's not really recorded as having done much fighting herself , they could be paladins, or they could be saintly figures, depending on how you want to use them.
Martin of Tours is a little bit of a special case, since he started as a Roman officer, but eventually became a monk and later a bishop. The number one rule, of course, is have fun. If everyone is in agreement it's perfectly OK to have a Crusades or Reconquest campaign where you battle the Saracens and never think twice, where St.
